Using the network

To use the IRC network you'll need an IRC Client program such as BitchX, irssi, X-Chat, mIRC Chatzilla.

Connection settings:

If your IRC client supports SSL (or perhaps, TLS), you should enable the following settings:

Finding other channels

To view a list of other channels on the network run:

/list

Talking to people

When you have joined a channel anything you type will be sent to everyone else. The only exception are phrases starting with a /.

You can "emote" or make an action by using the /me command, eg:

/me shrugs

To send a private message to someone use the /msg command, eg:

/msg wifijane hi there

Ignoring people

If someone is pissing you off, type

/ignore thatpersonsname

eg:

/ignore bobw

Creating your own channel

To create a new channel simply join it. If the channel is not already in use it will be created for you.

eg:
 /join #mychannelname

Managing your channel

When you have operator status (or any user who has a @ in front of their username) you can change channel modes (such as who can modify the topic, requiring SSL, setting a channel password, moderation status, etc.) and kick abusive users.

Owning your channel

When you create a channel you do not own it. If you leave your new channel you may lose your operator privilleges to another user, or no one at all.

If you've registered your IRC name you can register a channel using this command:

/chanserv register #mychannelname "This is a description of my channel"

More information about the /chanserv command can be found using /chanserv help

Registering your nick name

To prevent anyone else from using your nickname, or to use chanserv features you must register your nickname:

/nickserv register <password> <email address>

You'll need to verify your registration by Email, so make sure you use a valid address.

Logging into your nick name

The next time you connect to IRC you'll need to login to nickserv:

/nickserv identify <password>
